In Bruges Analysis: Themes of Redemption

Watch my In Bruges analysis in this video essay, which explores the screenplay’s character development and themes of redemption.

In Bruges explained priest death

The story is about two hitmen, Ray and Ken, who are sent to Bruges after a job goes horribly wrong.

The story plays out amongst the Catholic textures and gothic architecture that adorn the city.

This physical space is a fitting backdrop for a story about redemption, which is explored in the character dynamics as the story progresses.

Flexing his grasp of subtlety, McDonagh creates a sense that the two characters are in purgatory as they await judgement from their boss, Harry.

In Bruges explained Ken Ray

The mystery of what went wrong is revealed later in the story, as it transpires that Ray accidentally murdered a small boy after carrying out a hit on a priest.

When Harry finally makes contact, Ken is thrown into a moral dilemma, as he is ordered to murder his best friend, which is ultimately what brings depth and scope to the script’s central theme of redemption.

Throughout the video essay, I present the screenwriting techniques that McDonagh uses to enhance conflict and character development.
