Moonlight Analysis: Themes of Masculinity

Watch my Moonlight analysis in this deep-dive video essay, which explores the screenplay’s character development and themes of masculinity.

Moonlight analysis Little

Moonlight is an incredibly powerful coming-of-age tale of a young black man named Chiron.

The screenplay is divided into three chapters, each depicting a significant period in Chiron’s life.

By doing this, writer and director Barry Jenkins interweaves the script’s structure with its central character, expressing how Chiron’s growth and regression fluctuate as his life progresses.

Moonlight uses masculinity as its central theme to explore how Chiron’s internal, interpersonal and societal conflict affects his character development.

The script expresses this with extremely tight visual storytelling through sophisticated representations of how the protagonist grapples with his identity and other struggles in his upbringing.

Moonlight’s emphasis on character development as its design principle makes it a thrilling character-driven drama whose exploration of identity and facade leaves a lasting impact on its audience.

Throughout the screenplay, Moonlight highlights the struggles many young black men face as they navigate their identity and societal expectations.

The story also explores notions of sexuality, love, family, and self-discovery.
