The Banshees of Inisherin Analysis: Themes of Friendship

Watch my The Banshees of Inisherin analysis in this deep-dive video essay, which explores the screenplay’s character development and themes of friendship.

The Banshees of Inisherin Analysis Colm Padraic

The film is a comedy/drama that takes place on the fictional island of Inisherin. It focuses on two lifelong friends, Pádraic and Colm, whose relationship comes to an abrupt end.

My video essay analyses the story’s plot and key aspects of character development whilst considering the symbolic implications of the main characters’ dispute.

Throughout the film, the value of friendship is highlighted as Pádraic and Colm face the challenges of navigating their relationship amidst the backdrop of a larger conflict.

The story is a tight allegory for the Irish Civil War, which provides the historical backdrop to the story itself.

In this way, McDonagh’s origins as a playwright clearly shine through, as the script is filled with poetic irony and fable, which all help to provide a deeper layer of meaning to the story.

These aspects of the script are particularly striking in their ability to present a nuanced and accessible perspective on the complex history of Ireland’s conflict.

In other words, by examining the feud between the two main characters, McDonagh offers his audience a window into the bitter feud that has defined domestic relations in Ireland over the last hundred years.
